Search Marketing Expo
This panel talked about local mobile search opportunities and had a lot of statements which, I believe people in mobile search might question. In particular, Dan Miller from Opus Research had this to say:

Mobile Search is an extension of my desktop search and the desktop would be the control panel for mobile preferences.

He also claimed that local mobile search is useless without maps and sited Directory Assistance, Turn-by-Turn Navigation and Who/What’s Nearby as examples.

Local Mobile Search does not require advertising or promotion from local business as the national brands dominate.

Local Mobile Search is not natural for Social Networking now, since there is low awareness and few sites have a mobile component.

Lastly, the jury is still out on whether Local Mobile Search can thrive if the carriers don’t support it.

What Do We Think

I can’t say I entire agree with the statements he made above. There are lots of innovation in mobile that fly in the face of a lot of these statements made. I just hope the research project Dan conducted can be revisited soon and start changing some opinions!
